Our ongoing exhibit investigates the waterways, terrain, flora, and fauna naturally found within the boundaries of the place we have called Rye for the past four centuries. By illustrating stories from the history of this area, this exhibit enlightens visitors to the impact human beings have had on this place's natural state and the role they still play in its development and preservation.
The following are several themes along which Rye's stories are told:
Paradise- Pure and natural Rye
Contact- The water brings the seed
Development- Taking root
Modernity- Growing like a weed
Sustenance- Living by the land
Perseverence- Weathering the storm
Convergence- The community bloom
Awareness- The ebb and flow
These themes correlate with several noteworthy epochs within this area's history:
Pre-history
Early Settlement
Revolutionary America
The Gilded Age
The Depression and the World Wars
Post-war to the 1970s
1980s to the Present
This exhibit is an ongoing exhibit, and our hope for it is that it will change over time, as more and more townspeople visit and are inspired to share their stories of Rye. The board and staff at the Rye Town Museum welcome any original stories or retellings, as well as additional artifacts or photographs relating to the exhibit you may be willing to share with us and the town.
