Smuttynose Island Murder Mystery Tour - A Chilling Tale, An Unforgettable Day
For something truly unique—and only offered this summer—don’t miss our special deep-dive into one of New England’s most infamous crimes: the 1873 Smuttynose axe murders.
Our day begins at the Rye Public Library with a riveting presentation by a professional storyteller, recounting the 1873 axe murders on Smuttynose Island. You’ll hear the gripping tale of Lewis Wagner, the drifter who was ultimately hanged for the brutal slaying of two Norwegian women.
After enjoying a catered box lunch from The Hungry Lobster, we’ll travel to Rye Harbor and board a boat for our journey to Smuttynose Island. With no dock, we’ll raft ashore for a wet landing—adding to the adventure. {Please note: Due to the wading, uneven terrain, and some climbing, this trip is not suitable for individuals with limited mobility.}
Once ashore, a professional guide will lead us across the island, revisiting the scene of the infamous crime. We’ll explore the grounds near the historic Haley House and gain a deeper understanding of the events that shocked the region over 150 years ago.
To conclude the day, we’ll head to nearby Star Island—where you’ll have time to relax, reflect, and enjoy the tranquil summer surroundings before returning to shore.
Tickets are limited to two per member/person.
