Following a slide presentation at the Secoast Science Center, we’ll explore massive concrete batteries, Panama mounts (gun platforms), and enjoy scenic coastal views. Park entry fee may apply. In 1614, when the venerable Captain John Smith dropped anchor among the Isles of Shoals, he was so captivated by them that he named them “Smith’s Isles” for himself. “Of all four parts of the world that I have seen not inhabited,” he wrote, “could I have but the means to transport a Colony, I would rather live here than anywhere.”

Lying just six miles southeast of the entrance to Portsmouth Harbor, five of the nine islands are in Maine, Town of Kittery (Duck, Appledore, Smuttynose, Malaga, and Cedar) and four are in New Hampshire, Town of Rye (Star, Lunging, White, and Seaveys). The islands are spectacularly scenic, and their long history is crammed with many tales.

Join us to tour the islands with historical narration by Isles of Shoals historian Ann Beattie. We will leave and return to Rye Harbor on the Shining Star.

For lunch on Star Island, there is also a food truck with burgers, dogs and lobster rolls all very reasonably priced. Feel free to pack a picnic!

Meet on the dock at Rye Harbor at 12:45 p.m. The boat leaves at 1 p.m.- parking is available there for the day for $10

Dress appropriately for the weather. You may want to bring a jacket or windbreaker for the boatride.

Important Mobility Information: During this tour, guests will disembark and walk over rocky, uneven terrain. The path may include loose stones, natural obstacles, and areas without paved walkways. Participants should be able to maintain their balance and walk independently. This excursion is not recommended for individuals who require a walker, cane, or other mobility assistance devices.

Join The Rye Historical Society on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at the Rye Public Library from 6-7:30 p.m. for “Rye’s Star Island Connection: The Oceanic Hotel’s 150 Years at Sea,” presented by Anne Beattie and Joe Watts.

Learn the fascinating history of the grand Oceanic Hotel on Star Island, part of Rye, NH - one of New England’s last remaining Victorian-era resort hotels.

Discover the clever scheme that sparked its creation and the spirited rivalry with the famed Appledore House just across the harbor, as hundreds once packed their trunks to summer at the Isles of Shoals.

Hear how devastating fires destroyed both hotels, and marvel at the ingenuity that led to the Oceanic’s rebirth, preserving its legacy on storied Star Island.

Today, visitors continue to be drawn by the island’s natural beauty and enduring sense of place. Ongoing sustainability and preservation efforts on Star Island ensure that this remarkable setting, and the Oceanic itself, will be a protected part of the Rye community for generations to come.

The story of Rye is deeply American, shaped by its strategic coastal location. Native peoples lived here as early as 12,000 years ago, and Europeans arrived in the 1600s, establishing a community of farmers and fishermen. By the Revolutionary War, Rye numbered about 850 residents, some of whom marched on Fort William and Mary in 1774—the war’s first overt act. The 1800s brought tourism and grand hotels, attracting presidents and dignitaries. In 1874, the first successful transatlantic cable came ashore just south of Locke’s Neck. The 20th century saw Rye’s population quintuple, spurred by WWII and steady coastal growth. Yet despite change, the town has preserved its rural character through conservation, historic homes, and winding roads. Today, Rye balances natural beauty with human presence, standing on the shoulders of twenty generations. This book offers a sweeping companion to Langdon Parsons’ 1905 History of Rye, N.H., enriched by contributions from more than twenty voices. Book contains 160 photos and images to illustrate our historical narrative.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Born in 1945, Alex Herlihy is a native of Rye and grew up on the Wedgwood Farm on Lang Road, which his parents bought in 1937.

Through his historic house, his town and his mother's interest in Rye's past, he developed an early love for history and taught it, mostly at Oyster River High School in Durham. He is currently Rye’s Town Historian, as well as a charter member of the Rye Historical Society (1976). He has been involved with the Rye Civic League since 1983 and has swerved on several town boards. He and his family are forever grateful to Jessie and Edward Herlihy for giving us the gift of Rye
