FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

When is the museum open?

The Rye Town Museum is open Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. May through October. Want to visit outside of those hours? Not a problem. Please schedule your appointment through our scheduling program for a 30-minute visit. People needing additional time for research can make a note during the confirmation of the appointment.

What is in the museum?

The museum houses items particular to Rye of historical or cultural interest. We have a variety of textiles on display, as well as a library which contains books related to Rye and items of interest to researchers and genealogists.

What is the difference between the RHS and the other community groups?

There are a few organizations in town that people confuse with the historical society. Historic District Commission (HDC) preserves the unique collection of historically, architecturally, and culturally significant buildings and structures in the town, and ensures that new buildings and structures and alterations to existing buildings and structures and uses of buildings and structures within the Rye Historic District are in visual harmony with their neighbors in order to preserve the history of Rye. The Rye Heritage Commission (RHC)is town wide, unlike that of the Historic District Commission and in addition to acquisition, conservation and proper use of the cultural resources of the town. House Plaques and Family Graveyards are under their purview. RHS is a private non profit organization, and HDC and RHC  are part of town govt.
